Unit 1 Ethical Application Assignment

Unit 1 Ethical Application Assignment

Q Objective Be able to articulate and apply ethical theories to real-life situations. Description After learning the basics of Kantian, Utilitarian, and Virtue Theory approaches to ethics, we will apply each ethical theory. Watch The Office Season 1 Episode 4 ‘The Alliance.’ It is on Netflix. If you do not have Netflix, you can sign up for a free trial, or watch a few key clips here ( The Office - The Alliance (Episode Highlight 1)Links to an external site.) and here (The Office - The Alliance (Episode Highlight 2)Links to an external site. . This show contains several immoral (and moral) actions. You will 1) outline two of these three ethical theories, stating how you would determine whether an action is moral/immoral according to that ethical theory, 2) outline three actions from the video and state whether they would be moral or immoral according to each of these ethical theories, and 3) justify why each ethical theory would find that action moral or immoral. Your paper should be organized as follows: 1. A short paragraph outlining ethical theory 1. 2. A short paragraph outlining ethical theory 2. 3. First Action 1. A very short description of the first action you will analyze. (1-2 sentences) 2. Would ethical theory 1 say this is moral, immoral, or neutral? Why? (4-5 sentences) 3. Would ethical theory 2 say this is moral, immoral, or neutral? Why? 4-5 sentences) 4. Second Action 1. A very short description of the first action you will analyze. (1-2 sentences) 2. Would ethical theory 1 say this is moral, immoral, or neutral? Why? (4-5 sentences) 3. Would ethical theory 2 say this is moral, immoral, or neutral? Why? 4-5 sentences) 5. Third Action 1. A very short description of the first action you will analyze. (1-2 sentences) 2. Would ethical theory 1 say this is moral, immoral, or neutral? Why? (4-5 sentences) 3. Would ethical theory 2 say this is moral, immoral, or neutral? Why? 4-5 sentences) Due Date • By 11:59 p.m., Sunday, CT. ________________________________________ Unit 1: Overview | Lecture | Discussion | Ethical Application Assignment Rubric Ethical Application 1. A short paragraph outlining ethical theory 1. Kantianism Theory focuses on the intention of the action. The second formulation basically states you can’t use people, it’s just like objectifying a person for personal gain. The three-step process to state your reason for action, would that reason make sense if everyone acted in that way and consider whether a reasonable person would desire a world in which people followed that rule. If the answers to three step process is yes then it’s moral, and if not it’s immoral.
